Make sure you take the time to design quality materials that represent your brand and stand out from the crowd.

1. App Store Icons

Requirements & Sizes

Design your icon recognizable with a single focus point so that your users will identify it easily. Test your icon on different wallpapers to see how it will look on the phone and on different backgrounds. Create your own app icons, don’t use photos or screenshots – it is not recommended.

App Icon Attributes

Square (your icon will be automatically rounded).

Use sRGB or P3 colour schemes.

Make flattened layers with no transparency.

App icons for the app store have to be .PNG format.

Play Store Icons

Requirements & Sizes

Google Play has recently adopted a new icon system to ensure consistency and a cleaner look among all apps on the store and across different devices. You will have to create a square icon for your app and Google Play will automatically apply rounded corners (the corner radius is 20%) and shadows.

Shortly, if your icon consists of minimalistic artwork, place it on the keyline grid instead of placing it on a full bleed background. However, if your logo is based on illustrated artwork, it might look better on a full-bleed background. We recommend checking the keyline grids from Google before you start working on your app icon.

App Icon Attributes

Square (rounded corners & shadows will be applied).

Use sRGB colour schemes.

Android app icons have to be 512×512 px and max 1024kb.

App icons have to be 32-bit .PNG format.

2. App Store Screenshots

App Store Screenshots

Requirements & Sizes

You have to upload at least one screenshot in the App Store Connect, but the maximum number of images is 10. In the app store listing, the screenshots’ corners will be rounded automatically. If you decide to add an app preview video, it will be displayed before the screenshots.

You can also localize the screenshots if your app is available in multiple languages. This way users know right away that they can use the app in their language and they understand the features that you are presenting.

Supported Sizes

  • 6.5 inch (iPhone 11 Pro Max, 11, Xs Max, XR) 1242 x 2688 px – required
  • 5.8 inch (iPhone 11 Pro, X, Xs ) 1125 x 2436 px (can be scaled from 6.5 inch screens) – optional
  • 5.5 inch (iPhone 6s Plus, 7 Plus, 8 Plus) 1242 x 2208 px (4.7 inch screenshots can be scaled from these if needed) – required
  • Apple Watch (series 3, 4 and 5) 312 x 390 px or 368 x 448 px – required

Play Store Screenshots

Requirements & Sizes

You can upload a minimum of 2 screenshots and a maximum of 8 screenshots for each supported device. These have to be JPG or 24-bit PNG format, a minimum of 320 px and a maximum of 3840 px.

Screenshots are localizable on Android as well. If you upload a promo video, the thumbnail will appear before the screenshots.

Google Play Featured Graphic

The feature graphic is a mandatory asset for publishing your app.

This image is used to showcase your app in different featured categories on Google Play, such as trending or top-grossing app categories. Also, right after publishing, your app can get featured in the “New” categories.

The featured graphic should show off your app and attract new users. Keep in mind that it might not be displayed along with your app icon.

  • Format – JPEG or 24-bit PNG
  • Dimension – the featured graphic should be 1024px x 500px

How to & Inspiration

Take your time to make the graphic assets you upload to the app stores. In the screenshots, try to highlight the app features as much as you can so that users will understand better your app and its purpose. If your app is available in multiple languages, localize the screenshots. Catch users attention with beautiful screenshots and short texts to describe your app’s main features.

Make beautiful screenshots with easy to use tools like App Launchpad. We used App Launchpad to make catchy screenshots for our app, Ready Set Holiday!. It saves a lot of time, it is really easy to use and you can edit your screenshots for both iOS and Android listings.

Beautiful App Store Screenshots from Apps We Love

Seems like a lot to do? It can feel overwhelming at first, but don’t get alarmed; you can make only the required materials and update them as your app gets more popular. However, you have quite a few things to decide before you start working on them. Make sure you think everything through and you only start creating the materials after you have an idea of how you want to present your app to your users.

If you need help with the graphic assets, don’t hesitate to contact a designer or invest some money in a tool to make the process easier. These graphic assets are very important, they represent an app (sometimes a company’s image as well). This means that the materials need to look good.

And finally, don’t forget to update these materials periodically. Try to improve them based on insights from your users and based on the latest design trends.
